See the combinations

Learn with labelled card examples and a simple way to check each group.

Look at one group at a time

The examples below show basic combinations using specific cards. Focus on the ranks and suits rather than where the cards appear in your hand.

A sequence

Check whether the ranks are consecutive and whether the suit stays the same. In a pure sequence, no joker is substituting for a missing card.

A set

Look for equal ranks and different suits. Do not count a card in two groups at once when arranging the hand.

Try an exercise

Lay out three cards, describe the pattern and compare it with the example. Then change one card and ask whether the pattern still fits. This is a practice exercise, not a complete declaration.

Check the complete hand

Recognising one valid group is only part of the process. Return to your version’s declaration checklist before treating the whole hand as finished.

Look at the cards.

A pure sequence

Consecutive ranks, one suit. No substituted joker.

A set

The same rank in different suits.

A sequence with a joker
JK

Here the joker stands for the 8 of spades. Check your variant’s joker rules.

These are individual combinations, not a complete declaration.
